Catahoula Leopard Dog

Appearance

Though physical characteristics are varied, Catahoulas are usually muscular dogs with a rectangular-shaped body. They tend to have a large head with drop ears and a strong, slightly tapered muzzle. They tend to have a thick muscular neck and a long, curved tail. They come in many colors and have medium/short hair.

Catahoulas come in many different colors, including blue merle, red merle, brindle, and solid colors. Often, solid coat Catahoulas have small splashes of other colors such as white on their face, legs or chest. The leopard-like coat of most Catahoulas is the result of the merle gene. The merle gene does not normally affect the entire coat of the dog, but dilutes the color only in areas that randomly present the characteristic of the gene. Deeper colors are preferred; predominantly white coats are discouraged. Since the Catahoula is a working dog, coat color is not a primary consideration.

The Catahoula has a single smooth short or coarse medium coat. The breed may have any eye color or combination of colors, including blue, brown, green, or amber.

Coat

Catahoula Leopard Dogs feature a vast array of unique coats and patterns, most commonly characterized by merle (leopard) markings, brindle, or solid colors. Because they are working dogs, coat color is less critical than their health and temperament, resulting in highly diverse appearances.

Catahoula coats are generally categorized into these distinct colors and patterns:

• Leopard/Merle: The quintessential "leopard" look features a lighter base coat with darker spots or patches of contrasting color.

  • Blue Leopard (Blue Merle): Base shades range from slate/gray to black with darker splotches.

  • Red Leopard (Red Merle): Base coats in shades of brown, liver, or red, accented with darker brown or red patches.

  • White / Yellow Merle: Lighter or pale base backgrounds with random splotches of darker leopard color.

• Solid: Single-colored coats, which may still carry hidden merle genetics.

  • Colors include Solid Black, Solid Blue, Chocolate (Brown), and Red / Liver.

• Brindle: A tiger-striped look typically consisting of dark stripes over a red, tan, or fawn base coat.

• Patchwork: Mostly white base coats featuring large, distinct patches of any of the other standard Catahoula colors.

• Trimming: Many coats (both merle and solid) are often accompanied by white, tan, or buff markings, usually found on the chest, face, and paws.

Temperament

The Catahoula Leopard Dog has a very docile and sweet demeanor. A typical dog is gentle, easygoing, and gets along with children and other animals. However, they may act shy and reserved when around strangers; it's not uncommon for the Catahoula Leopard Dog to act sheepish or timid with unfamiliar surroundings. With any dog breed, the typical manner associated does not explicitly mean the dog will display said traits.

Activity level

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is a very active breed with moderate to high energy. With longer legs bred into them, they are a very fast dog. They require a lot of exercise and do best in habitats where they have room to run. If they live in a suburban area such as a neighborhood, they should have a fenced-in yard and be taken on multiple walks daily.

 

Trainability

Obedience training is essential for this breed due to their independence and natural instincts to herd and work. Because of its strong, natural instincts, Catahoula Leopard Dogs can easily be trained for a variety of job, from hunting to guarding livestock as long as training and boundaries are established from the beginning.​
